The core objectives of NAUS includes

1. I. To preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigerian which guarantees the citizens freedom to movement, speech and as association.
2. II. To promote and protect the fundamental human rights of Nigerian university students.
3. III. To create a mutual relationship between students and school authorities.
4. IV. To promote friendly relationship with other students’ bodies whose aims and objectives are acceptable to the association.
5. V. To promote unity, patriotism and the spirit of the cooperation amongst Nigerian university students.

NAUS has an operational working relationship with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), international Union of Students (IUS), All Africa Student Union (AASU), West African Student Union (WASU) European Student Union (ESU) and other international students’ organizations. The activities of NAUS are carried out within the framework of its constitution these among other things are: to advocate/ensure quality education in all Nigeria universities, to collaborate with other organizations for Socio-Economic development in Nigeria and to constructively agitate for the welfarism of Nigeria university students at all times. .

The pioneer officers were elected at the convention held in Anambra State University now Chukuwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbarian campus and was inaugurated on 18th September, 2015 at Federal University Of Petroleum Resources , Effurum, Delta State, the inauguration was delay till September due to challenges that confronted the association.

The 2nd national Convention held between 23rd to 26th November, 2017 at Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State. Where one LAWAL ADABAYO of University of Abuja lost the election to Comrade Kasimu Abdullahi Idrisu of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai won the keenly contested election with 42 to 12 vote. And the National Executive Council was inaugurated on 20th December, 2017 At Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State. .
